| Holy Roman Emperor, born in Reichswald bei Kleve, W Germany, the son of Otto II. He was crowned King of Germany (983), but reigned under the guardianship of his mother Theophano until 991, and thereafter under that of his grandmother Adelheid until 994. He was called to Italy by Pope John XV to help him control the Roman aristocracy's power. At John's death he had his cousin elected pope as Gregory V, and was crowned emperor by him in 996. Another revolt by the aristocracy forced him to return to Rome in 998. He had his tutor, Gerbert d'Aurillac, elected pope as Sylvester II with the plan to re-establish a Christian Roman Empire (Renovatio Imperii), with Rome as the seat of a universal empire comprising Teutons (Germanen), Latins (Romanen), and Slavs under the common rule of emperor and pope. He was forced to flee from Rome following a revolt in 1001. |
