| The first German pope. He was elected pope in 996 through the intervention of his cousin Emperor Otto III. A revolt of the Roman people, led by Giovanni Crescenzio II, opposed him and installed John XVI as antipope. Gregory was forced to flee Rome and was only able to return with Otto's help. |
