| biography:
| Holy Roman Emperor, the son of Otto I the Great. He was crowned King of Germany (961) and co-emperor (967), and in 972 married Theophano, daughter of the Byzantine Emperor John Tzimiskes. He took over as sole ruler in 973, and was victorious against Henry the Quarrelsome of Bavaria (Heinrich II der Zänker) and the Danes. He acquired Lorraine for the German Reich (980), but was defeated by the Saracens in Lower Italy at Cotrone (982). The uprising by the Slavs and Danes in 983 led to the loss of nearly all the German territory acquired by his father E of Elbe and Saale. |
