| Theologian, born in Lichte, EC Germany. A student in Jena, Marburg, Paris, and Göttingen, he taught at Göttingen and Münster. In 1933 he fled from Nazi Germany to Britain and then the USA, where he became professor of New Testament at Princeton from 1941. He advocated a ‘biblical realism’ which neither took Scripture literally nor ignored its teaching, but sought to be true to the writers' intentions. His books include The Biblical View of Sex and Marriage (1960). |
