| Structural engineer, born in Schaffhausen, N Switzerland. He emigrated to the USA in 1904, where he designed some of America's greatest suspension bridges, including the George Washington Bridge (1067 m/3500 ft) in New York (1931), Golden Gate Bridge (1280 m/4200 ft) in San Francisco (1937), and Verrazano Narrows Bridge (1298 m/4260 ft) in New York (1965), each in its day the longest span in the world. |
