| Journalist, born in Wiesbaden, Germany. In 1900 he became owner and editor of the New York Post, inherited from his father, Henry Villard. His pacifist position later adversely affected circulation and he sold the newspaper in 1918, but retained the Nation, which he edited until 1932. |
