| biography:
| Writer born in Berg, near Starnberg, S Germany. A conscientious objector in World War 1 and a participant in the Bavarian Revolution, he emigrated to the USA in 1938, becoming naturalized in 1958. His writing, some of which is in dialect, concentrates on life in the Bavarian countryside, and includes Kalender-Geschichten (2 vols, 1929, 1957). Far from idealizing country life, he seeks rather to attack the backwardness and bigotry among the people, the overbearing influence of the Church, and the grinding poverty. His autobiographical writing shows him to be a keen and observant witness of world events. |
