| Mathematician, born in Kobrin, Belarus (formerly, Russia). Emigrating to the USA to teach at Johns Hopkins (1927), he later joined the Harvard faculty (1969) and specialized in algebraic geometry, modern algebra, and topology. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, he received the National Medal of Science (1965) and the Cole Prize. |
