| Architect, born in Rio de Janeiro, SE Brazil. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Brazil and began work in the office of Lucio Costa (1935). From 1936 to 1943 he joined Costa and others to design the ministry of education and public health buildings in Rio, including a period with Le Corbusier as consultant architect. With Costa he designed the Brazilian Pavilion at the New York World Fair (1939). He became architectural adviser to Nova Cap, serving as its chief architect (1957–9), co-ordinating the development of Brasília. Further major works are the Exhibition Hall in São Paolo (1953), and the President's Palace, Law Courts and Cathedrals in Brasilia. He was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1963 and in 1988 he shared the Pritzker Architecture Prize with Gordon Bunshaft. |
