| British archaeologist and pioneer aerial photographer, born in Mumbai (Bombay), W India. He studied at Oxford, served with the Royal Flying Corps in World War 1, and identified the potential of aerial photography in archaeology, producing Wessex from the Air (1928). He served as the first archaeology officer of the Ordnance Survey (1920–40), and did much to develop the cartographic recording of archaeology. In 1927 he founded the journal Antiquity, which he edited until his death. |
