| Italian general, born in Condino, Trentino, N Italy. He fought with Garibaldi, then served in the Italian army in Africa from 1887, becoming first commander-in-chief and then governor of Eritrea (1892). He was defeated at Amba Alagi (1895), Macallè (1896), and Adua (1896) for which he was court martialled but acquitted. In 1898 he published Memorie d'Africa 1892–1896. |
