| biography:
| British general, born in Naini Tal, NE India. He trained at Woolwich, was commisioned in 1922, and served in the Sudan (1928–33) and Palestine (1936–9), where he helped create a Jewish defence force. In the Burma theatre (1942) he organized the Chindits - specially trained jungle-fighters drawn from British, Ghurka, and Burmese forces, who were supplied by air, and thrust far behind the enemy lines. He helped Frank Merrill train a similar group of US troops. |
