| Television talk-show host, actor, and producer, born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, USA. After an unsettled childhood, she moved to Nashville and studied at Tennessee State University, beginning work as a radio reporter. She hosted her first TV chat-show in Baltimore in 1978, moving to Chicago in 1984, where she launched the highly successful Oprah Winfrey Show (3 Emmies) in 1986. She then moved into management, establishing Harpo Productions in Chicago. Her film work includes The Color Purple (1985, Oscar nomination), Throw Momma From the Train (1987), and Beloved (1998). She is also well-known for her exercise and dieting programmes, and as an activist in support of children's rights. |
