| Anatomist, botanist, writer, and architect, born in Sweden. He studied at Uppsala and Leyden, was appointed professor of medicine at Uppsala in 1660, and discovered the lymphatic system (1652) simultaneously with the Danish physician Thomas Bartholin (1616–80). He planned a vast illustrated work on all known plants, but his manuscripts and wood blocks were destroyed in the great Uppsala fire of 1702. The botanical genus Rudbeckia is named after him. He also achieved fame throughout Europe with his literary work Atlantikan (1675–98). |
