| Art historian, born in Strasbourg, France. He emigrated to the USA (1948) and studied at Harvard (1950 BA), the University of Paris (1950), and Princeton University (1955 PhD). He taught at the University of Michigan (1954–69) and at Harvard (1969), and is known for his critical works on Islamic art and archaeology. |
