| Fashion designer, born in Paris, France. The son of an emigré Russian countess, he moved to the USA in 1936. He began by designing costumes for Hollywood movies before establishing his own New York City firm in 1950. His trademarks included provocative sheaths, cocktail dresses, and, in the early 1960s, his widely copied ‘Jackie Kennedy’ look. His dashing good looks, urbane manner, and associations with glamorous women made him as much a fixture of the society and gossip columns as in the fashion section of the media. |
