| biography:
| Astronomer, born in Århus, NC Denmark. While working at the Royal Observatory in Paris (1672–81) he used eclipses of Jupiter's satellites to make the first determination of the velocity of light (1675), which he calculated to be 225 000 km per sec (140 000 mi per sec). 20th-c measurements give the speed as 299 793 km per sec (186 282 mi per sec). |
