| King of Norway (1957–91), born near Sandringham, Norfolk, E England, UK, the son and successor of Haakon VII and Maud, daughter of Edward VII of Britain. He studied in Norway and at Oxford, and was an outstanding sportsman and Olympic yachtsman in his youth. He stayed in Norway when it was invaded by Germany in 1940, and was appointed head of the Norwegian armed forces. Later he escaped with his father to England, returning in 1945. In 1929 he married Princess Martha of Sweden (1901–54), and had two daughters and a son, Harald (1937– ), who succeeded to the Norwegian throne as Harald V in 1991. |
