He spent his youth in France, studied architecture, and opened offices in Boston (1891) and then Newport (1893), where Edith Wharton hired him to decorate her house. Together they wrote the influential Decoration of Houses (1897), which promoted simplicity and suitability. His work on other Newport mansions was characterized by 18th-c French good taste. |
