| biography:
| Last emperor of the W half of the old Roman Empire (ruled 475–476). His father, Orestes, had risen to high rank under Emperor Julius Neppos, on whose flight he conferred the vacant throne on Augustus (he received his nickname, a diminutive form of Augustulus, because he was still a child at the time), retaining power in his own hands. After Orestes was killed by the barbarians, Augustulus was forced to retire to a villa near Naples. |
