| Physical chemist, born in Oslo, Norway. He studied there and in Berlin, and spent his career in Oslo as professor of chemistry (1934–64). In 1943, independently of Sir Derek Barton, he developed the basic ideas of chemical conformational analysis (the study of the three-dimensional geometric structure of molecules), for which he shared with Barton the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1969. |
