| British pop group, formed in 1992 with five members, all but one from Manchester, NW England, UK: Liam Gallagher (1972– , vocals), Noel Gallagher (1967– , lead guitar, backing vocals, songwriter), Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs (1965– , rhythm guitar), replaced in 1999 by Gem Archer, Paul ‘Guigsy’ McGuigan (1971– , bass guitar), replaced in 1999 by Andy Bell, and Tony McCarroll (drums), replaced in 1995 by Alan White (1972– , born in London). Their first single, ‘Supersonic’ (1994), became an immediate number 1 hit, and was followed by a series of hits, such as ‘Shakermaker’ (1994), ‘Wonderwall’ (1995), ‘Don't Look Back in Anger’ (1996), and ‘D'You Know What I Mean’ (1997). Their first album, Definitely Maybe (1994), was the fastest selling debut album in British pop history, later albums including What's The Story (Morning Glory) (1995), Be Here Now (1997), Standing On the Shoulders of Giants (2000), and Heathen Chemistry (2002). The group rose to become the leading UK band of the 1990s, touring widely, the flamboyant personal lives of the Gallagher brothers attracting the kind of media attention that had not been seen since the Beatles (with whom - along with God - they readily compared themselves). |
