| biography:
| Irish statesman and president (1945–59), born in Dublin, Ireland. A pioneer in the Sinn Féin movement and the Gaelic League, he fought in the Easter Rising (1916) and was imprisoned. Elected to the first Dáil in 1918, he became speaker (1919–21), minister for local government (1932–9) and minister for finance and education (1939–45). He was president of the Irish Republic from 1945, and was re-elected without opposition in 1952. |
