| biography:
| US representative, born in Perry, Georgia, USA. A widely exhibited artist, trained in Europe, she moved with her husband to New York, where she became active in social issues and befriended Eleanor Roosevelt. State associate chairman of the Democratic Party (1932–42), she became commissioner of the New York Board of Social Welfare (1923–34) before going to the US House of Representatives (1935–43), where she regularly supported the New Deal except for military legislation. |
