| biography:
| US governor, born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA. A Korean War army hero (he lost one leg), he became Southern Nevada Amateur Athletic Union president in 1959. After directing state and federal agencies, he opened a consulting firm in 1969. As governor of Nevada (Democrat, 1971–9), he passed a fair housing law and strong anti-pollution measures. He joined the Las Vegas Sun afterwards. |
