| biography:
| Geneticist, born in New York City, USA. He studied at Columbia and Wisconsin universities, and became professor of genetics at Rockefeller University, New York City (1964). Studies with mutants of the bacterium Salmonella led him to discover bacterial transduction (the transfer, by a phage particle, of genetic material between bacteria) and led to new knowledge of the location and behaviour of bacterial genes. |
