| New Zealand prime minister (1972–4), born in Waimate, New Zealand. He became president of the Labour Party (1964) and was Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives (1965–72). As prime minister, he stressed the need for greater economic co-operation with Australia at a time when Britain's entry into the European Economic Community would restrict the British market for New Zealand produce. He was strongly opposed to French nuclear tests in the Pacific (1973). He died in office. |
