| Surgeon, born in Gravenhurst, Ontario, SE Canada. He studied at Toronto University, and became a specialist in chest surgery, especially the treatment of tuberculosis. He worked as a surgeon in the Spanish Civil War (1936–7), and was in China during the Japanese war (1938–9), where he became a national hero. |
