| biography:
| Poet, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. He read Classics at University there, and was a primary schoolteacher for nearly 40 years. The first fellow in creative writing at Edinburgh University (1967–9), he then lectured in English studies at Stirling University (1970–7). The leading Scottish poet of his generation writing in English, he was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1986. His collections of quick, imagistic, and philosophic poems include Riding Lights (1955), A Round of Applause (1962), The White Bird (1973), and Voice-Over (1988). His Collected Poems were published in 1985 (revised 1990). |
