| Philosopher, born in Selden, Kansas, USA. Earning a Harvard doctorate, he joined the Princeton faculty in 1940. After serving in the US Navy (1942–5), he spent most of his remaining American career at Cornell (1947–58), then emigrated to Britain. He wrote a 1958 memoir of Ludwig Wittgenstein, who greatly influenced his own philosophy. |
