| biography:
| Japanese statesman and prime minister (1987–9), born in Kakeyamachi, SWC Japan. He trained as a kamikaze pilot during World War 2. After university and a brief career as a schoolteacher, he was elected to the House of Representatives as a Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) deputy in 1958, rising to become chief cabinet secretary (1971–2) and minister of finance (1982–6). He founded his own faction in 1987, and three months later was elected LDP president and prime minister. His administration was undermined by the uncovering of the Recruit-Cosmos insider share-dealing scandal which, though dating back to 1986, forced the resignation of senior government ministers. |
