| Conductor and musicologist, born in New York City, New York, USA. After private musical studies in the merchant marines (1944–9), he conducted choruses in New York, and in 1952 founded the New York Pro Musica Antiqua, one of the pioneering early music ensembles in the USA. Presenting original instrument versions of mediaeval and Renaissance music to worldwide acclaim, he was best known for his rediscovery and performance of The Play of Daniel (1958). |
