| biography:
| Missionary, and the earliest-known Christian leader in Scotland. He was consecrated bishop by the pope (394) and sent as an apostle to the W parts of Britain. On his way home from Rome he visited St Martin of Tours, who supplied him with masons, and to whom he later dedicated his Church. He selected Wigtownshire for the site of a monastery and church, called Candida Casa, which was built c.400. Successful in converting the S Picts, he died at Whithorn and was buried there, though other sources suggest he may have withdrawn to Ireland. Feast day 16 September. |
