| Writer, born in London, UK. She studied at Oxford, and worked in town and country planning (1946–7). She has written several novels, including Who Calls the Tune (1953), Under the Skin (1964), Walking Naked (1981), Circles of Deceit (1987, televised 1990), Family Money (1991), and Nice Change (1997). In 2001 appeared Ruffian on the Stair. She is also well known as a writer of adventure stories for children, such as The Witch's Daughter (1966), and her most successful work, Carrie's War (1973), based on her own childhood experiences. Later stories include Keeping Henry (1988), Granny the Pag (1995), and Off the Road (1998). |
