| Composer, born near Warsaw, Poland. Originally a military engineer, he studied under Rimsky-Korsakov, and after army service (1914–21) he became an influential professor of composition at Moscow Conservatory. Among his works are 27 symphonies, orchestral pieces, concertos for violin and cello, 13 string quartets, songs, and nine piano sonatas. |
