| biography:
| Soviet statesman, party official, and chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet (1965–77), born in Karlovka, EC Ukraine. In 1930 he joined the Communist Party, and after World War 2 took a leading role in the economic reconstruction of the liberated Ukraine. He held various senior posts (1950–65), and after the dismissal of Khrushchev (1964) became chairman of the Presidium. He was relieved of his office in 1977 and replaced by Brezhnev. |
