| Linguist, born in Moscow, Russia. He studied at Moscow and Leipzig universities, taught at Moscow, Rostov, and Sofia, and was appointed professor of Slavic Philology at the University of Vienna (1922). He is noted for his major contribution to the Prague school of linguistics and is the author of its most important work on phonology, Grundzüge der Phonologie (1939, Principles of Phonology). |
