| Cricketer, born in Chandigarh, Punjab, N India. An all-rounder, he made his first-class debut for Haryana at the age of 16, and played county cricket in England for Northants and Worcester. He led India to victory in the 1983 World Cup, and set a competition record score of 175 not out against Zimbabwe. In 1983 he became the youngest player (at 24 years 68 days) to perform a Test double of 2000 runs and 200 wickets (surpassing Ian Botham). In 1994 he broke Sir Richard Hadlee's record of 431 Test wickets by taking 432 wickets in his 130th Test match. He was named as India's Wisden Cricketer of the Century. |
