| biography:
| Composer and pianist, born in Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. He studied at the New South Wales Conservatory, and later in London. He worked as a producer and planner for the music department of the Australian Broadcasting Commission from 1955, and in 1966 won the prestigious Italia Prize with In the Head the Fire, a musical work for radio commissioned by the ABC. Other compositions include a violin concerto, Explorations for Piano and Orchestra, and a two-act opera, Lawrence Hargrave Flying Alone (1987). From Sorrowing Earth, his first major orchestral work in more than a decade, was considered the best work from an Australian composer by the Australian Music Centre in 1992. |
