| biography:
| Anatomist and geologist, born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He studied anatomy in Amsterdam, where he discovered the duct of the parotid gland and explained the function of the ovaries. He settled in Florence in 1665, as physician to the duke. Although brought up a strict Lutheran, he then became a Catholic, and in 1677 was made a bishop and apostolic vicar to N Germany. He was the first to explain the structure of the Earth's crust. |
