| biography:
| The pseudonym of a group of mostly French mathematicians from the Ecole Normale Supérieure, including Henri Cartan, Claude Chevalley, Jean Dieudonné, and André Weil. In the 1930s they conceived the plan of writing a treatise on pure mathematics which would set out the subject in a strictly logical development from its basic principles. Publication of Eléments de mathématiques by ‘Nicolas Bourbaki’ started in 1939, and continued until the 1980s, with books on several areas of mathematics, many of them highly influential. |
