| biography:
| French painter, born in St Petersburg, Russia. An orphan, he grew up and studied in Brussels, travelled in Spain and Italy, and moved to Paris in 1934. After serving in the Foreign Legion he became a French citizen (1948) and settled in Antibes. He was a leading abstract painter under the influence of his friend Georges Braque, and his paintings are recognizable for their heavy application of bright colours in rectangular patches. In the early 1950s his paintings became more figurative and in subdued colours. He committed suicide in 1955. |
