| biography:
| Painter, born in Paris, France. He studied in Antwerp, then spent eight years in England as assistant to Lely (1674–82). Greatly influenced by the Flemish school, he specialized in portraiture of the wealthy middle classes. He entered the Académie in 1686 and later became its director. His works include ‘Portrait de famille, dit autrefois le peintre, sa femme et sa fille’ and ‘La Belle Strasbourgeoise’. |
