| Dutch politician, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He was 13 times burgomaster of Amsterdam between 1682 and 1705. In the city's interest he opposed William III's English expedition, and signed the English trade agreement against his better judgement. He guided Peter the Great of Russia on his visit to Amsterdam in 1697–8. |
