He took part in the 1831 Modena risings, escaping first to France and then to Malta. Back in Italy he fought for the Roman Republic (1849) and helped Carlo Pisacane and Giuseppe Garibaldi with their expeditions. He fought with Garibaldi at Aspromonte (1862) and in the 3rd Independence War in 1866.
