| biography:
| Architect, from Stockholm, the son of Nicodemus Tessin (the Elder). He studied Classical and Baroque culture in Rome, was appointed royal architect in 1676, and succeeded his father as Stockholm city architect in 1682. He completed Drottningholm Palace and added the royal church (1690–9). Other notable structures include Steninge Castle (1694–98) and his own beautifully proportioned Tessin Palace (1696–1700). He planned gardens for royal palaces, did important work on Amelienborg Castle, Copenhagen (1697), the Louvre (1704–6), and the Apollo Temple, Versailles, but his greatest achievement was the Royal Palace, Stockholm, with an Italian style facade and French interior design, completed by his son, Carl Gustaf Tessin. |
