| Engineer, born in New York, USA. He was a pioneer in steam navigation, first building a model boat in 1782 propelled by side-paddle wheels turned by springs. He later established a foundry and built a steamboat there (1798). In 1811 he and Robert Fulton built the New Orleans, the first steamboat on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. |
