| biography:
| Pope (858–67), born in Rome, Italy. He asserted the supremacy of the Church against secular rulers such as Lothair, King of Lorraine (whose divorce he forbade) and Church leaders such as Hincmar, Archbishop of Reims. He had problems with the Eastern Church, however, particularly with Photius, whom he tried to depose as Patriarch of Constantinople, leading to the Photian schism. Feast day 13 November. |
