| biography:
| Dutch banker and politician, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He joined the Nederlandsche Bank, becoming director (1866–85) and president (1885–91), and was also professor in Amsterdam (1877–85). As a politician he served as minister of finance (1891–4), as prime minister and minister of finance (1897–1901), and as a Liberal MP (1905–9). He was fiercely anti-Marxist, supported free trade, and campaigned for the removal of indirect taxes. He had an international reputation as a theoretical economist. |
