| biography:
| Scholar and Italian patriot, born in Sibenik (formerly Sebenico), W Croatia. After graduating in law at Padua University, in 1824 he moved to Milan, where he met Manzoni. He then lived in Florence (1827–34) where he was a contributor to L'Antologia review and compiled the Dizionario dei sinonimi (1830), the forerunner of his later Dizionario della lingua italiana (1858–79). Forced to escape to Paris after publishing some anti-Austrian articles, he wrote the autobiographical Memorie poetiche (1838). Back in Italy, he took part in the Venice insurrection (1848–9) and was forced to flee once again. He died in Florence. Other works include Scintille (1841) and, arguably his best work, the novel Fede e bellezza (1840), characterized by a conflict between Catholic morality and sensuality. His poems were collected in Poesie in 1872. |
